Sal Patel

TIFF, Digital Studio

Sal began his undergraduate education with equal interests in Arts and Business. Pursuing a major in Commerce and a minor in Film Studies, at Queen's University and H.E.C Paris, would lay the foundation for a career spanning multiple industries and interests. Beginning 2008, in the midst of the mortgage-backed securities financial crisis, Sal worked in finance for five years, in everything from interest rate derivatives, to foreign exchange, and oil and gas. He capped-off his time in finance with TD Securities, where he gained exposure to risk management and high level strategy, working as a chief of staff to the head of Trading Risk Management. From there, he revisited his passion for film, taking a job working for the Toronto International Film Festival in 2013. He now works dangerously close to the best popcorn in town, at the TIFF Bell Lightbox, and gets to call watching movies 'work', while helping shape the digital content and product strategies for TIFF's Digital Studio. In his spare time, Sal manages a local indie folk band called Fort York, and has been an online music journalist since he first heard Arcade Fire. He also sits on the Board of Directors for Toronto French School, the fundraising committee of the Board for the Regent Park Film Festival and the Advisory Board of the Hand Eye Society. In 2011, Sal founded The Ham Presse, a not-for-profit digital design agency, focused on strategy, branding, and graphics for small to medium sized businesses and artists.
